The Lingering Cloud of Halitosis
It started subtly for Mateo, a whisper he initially dismissed. A quick coffee and a mint seemed to do the trick, but then the confidence began to erode. He noticed colleagues leaning back slightly during conversations, and his wife, Isabella, started offering him gum more often. It wasn't just a morning issue anymore; it was a persistent, unwelcome companion, a cloud of bad breath following him everywhere.
Mateo, a meticulous engineer, prided himself on his attention to detail, yet this seemingly simple problem felt entirely beyond his control. He tried everything he could think of: brushing more frequently, gargling with mouthwash until his throat burned, even cutting out garlic from his diet. Nothing worked for more than a fleeting moment. The frustration simmered, making him withdraw in social settings and at work.
He knew it was called halitosis, the clinical term for his predicament, but knowing the name didn't bring him any closer to a solution. Mateo's vibrant personality was slowly being overshadowed by this self-consciousness. He longed for the days when he could speak freely, laugh loudly, and be close to Isabella without a second thought. The social anxiety caused by his bad breath was real.
